Brunswick/St. Simons Island is a community on the southeast coast of Georgia, about 1.5 hours north of Jacksonville, Florida and about an hour south of Savannah, Georgia. It is a Atlantic coastal town dating from the 18th century.
The original YWCA of Brunswick was chartered in 1918 in downtown Brunswick and has been growing every since. The YWCA provides services for the elderly, programs for youth, and activities covering all aspects of the community.
In 1991 the YWCA built new quarters in northwest Glynn County and included an indoor 25 yard pool.
L. A. "Buddy" Baarcke was hired as swimming coach/aquatics director and formed the Brunswick Y Swim Team from the Golden Isles Swim Team on April 1, 1991. Since that date, starting with 11 children and now up to 60 team members, the YWCA of Brunswick has been a force to be reckoned with. "Water Dawg" swimmers have won 41 individual state USA swimming titles, and the team has placed as high as fourth in Georgia Swimming, beating all but the three Atlanta mega-teams. The team regularly wins north Florida invitational meet. BYST swimmers have scored at several Junior National Championships and qualified for Senior Nationals.
In 1996 the YWCA completed an outdoor 50 meter by 25 yard Olympic size pool and now hosts several major meets each spring-summer. The pool area features a 140' water slide. The YWCA also has a full-size gymnasium, Cybex and Cardio exercise rooms with treadmills and stairclimers, and a well-equipped weight room.
The YWCA of Brunswick is proud to serve as the home of the "Water Dawgs"
